Devopsdays MSP 2024

đź‘‹ Psst, this is a draft!

Just a quick note: this is a draft entry. That is, an entry literally tagged draft which I’ve published. The quality may be lower than typical a benchmark post, although that is personal distinction. You can read more in my announcement. Cheers.

Published

First time at a devopsdays event. Was able to get a free ticket by emailing the organizers if they needed any volunteer help. They did not, but said they had a program for giving free tickets to students and people new to the industry. I’m neither—just unemployed—but they generously still gave me one.

Mostly some in-the-moment thoughts along with some brief reflection after each day.

Day 1

Nice venue at the Minneapolis Hilton downtown. Took the bus.

Great coffee and snacks.

Interesting morning talks. No notes.

OK lunch, sandwiches too bready.

The “open space” is really just an unconference setup. Which is a great format I might add. I mostly talked with people during this, but also did attend a session on “crazy bugs” which was mostly a swap of stories. Fun times.

I really liked the “ignite” lighting talk format: 20 slides, 15 seconds per slide and it auto-advances. So that’s 5 minutes flat with quick pacing. You can sort of game the system by duplicating slides, but that was rare.

Day 2

Again, took the bus. I was smart this time and took a thermos to refill with coffee. Based #zerowaste amirite.

The first talk of the day, Shell Scripting 101 by Corwin Diamond had some great comedic timing at the end. I’m not that into Windows for development, but admittedly PowerShell is great and provides proper objects.

I was the most excited for Xe Iaso’s talk later in the morning entitled “Scaling a social network on a whiteboard.” It absolutely lived up to my expectations, plus I was able to talk 1:1 with Xe later in the day and get some exclusive stickers. 10/10 experience would recommend.

Lunch was a bit better—I didn’t find my sandwich “too bready” like Day 1. I had a great time over lunch talking with some local friends from Slack and Cyberia.

The open spaces unconference setup returned for the afternoon and was a good time. In order, I attended a discussion around tooling and productivity (I left when it devolved into React vs Angular, lol) followed by people nerding out over Factorio and wrapped up the day with a session called “special interest share” where people got 2 minutes timed to talk about whatever they’re psyched and passionate about.

In Conclusion

Devopsdays MSP is an excellent event. In my opinion, it’s the cream of the crop for local events—Minnebar is also great.

It’s well organized with a solid mix of content and good vibes overall. I’ve certainly “done” devops, but I’m not “in” devops and I still felt 100% at home.

I love hearing from readers so please feel free to reach out.
